Description

Inscription: "Compta placet terrae, quae male compta Deo" On the reverse is a ghoset image of S. Iosephus 1887.159 that transferred through contact. The highly made-up woman pleases the world, where the plainly made-up woman pleases God," is an apt description of Mary Magdalene who, by tradition, gave up a life of prostitution to become a penitent hermit. On the reverse is a mirror ghost image of S. Iosephus, No. 22 (below), that transferred through direct contact sometime in the past. This drawing, and Nos. 22 and 23, may have originally been bound together, which may have caused the image transfers on the reverse of each of these drawings. This theory is supported by the fact that the left edge of all three appears to have been cut, as though they were cut out of a book. Furthermore, the sizes are the same, the media used are the same, and they appear to have been drawn by the same hand.
