Name/Title
Saints Cecilia and Maximus with Other MartyrsEntry/Object ID
1887.197Description
Saint Cecilia (with organ pipes and holding palm branches) and Saint Maximus (wearing a Roman soldier's uniform and holding a spear and palm branches), are in the center of this heavenly scene surrounded by several other martyrs and angels. The other martyrs could be Saint Cecilia's husband and his brother Tiburtius. They were all martyred around 230 A.D., during the reign of Emperor Alexander Severus. The palm branch is an attribute of martyrdom. The sketch is probably of (or for) a ceiling mural which has not yet been identified.Collection
