Artist’s Intent NoteNote
"Pierre Lesage worked quickly to record these seaside holidaymakers enjoying a summer retreat. Opposite a cluster of striped beach tents, a group of women wearing brightly-patterned dresses shade themselves from the sun’s intensity with hats and parasols. Above, a French flag is held aloft by the wind whose presence Lesage suggests with strong brushstrokes. The creation of this work coincided with the inaugural Tour de France, the cross-country cycling race now synonymous with the nation. Held between July 1 and 19, the course’s final stage launched from Nantes where Lesage was working at the time. Much like the oceanside views pioneered by his artistic predecessor Eugène Boudin, Lesage witnesses to an increasing number of French citizens enjoying activities of sport and leisure that characterized the Belle Époque" (Impressionist Legacies 91).Create Date
