THE CAST (in order of appearence)
The visit, is by far the best known play of the 45 year old Swiss playwright and novelist Friedrich Durrenmatt. The play was origionally written in German; the English version, as we have today cannot be called merely a translation; it has undergone too much metamorphosis.
Durrenmatt first presented the play in 1955 with the title Der Besuch der Alten Dame. When Maurice Valency made his first adaptation into English in 1956, he used this title literally, The Old Ladies Visit. It was Valency wgho had sensed the posiblities for the play when it was produced in Paris and various German cities in 1955; it was Valacny who determined that Alfred Lunt and his wife, Lynn Fontanne, were uniquely capible of playing the leading roles to suit the exacting standards of Broadway.
The Lunts preferred first to test the play in England. It was here that the grotesque elements of the interpretation of the female lead were altered.
It was revised Valency adaptation, then, which was taken to New York to open the beautiful new theater that had been constructed out of an old one and was to be named Lunt-Fontanne.Collection
