Three Muses Introduce a Young Man to SculptureEntry/Object ID
1887.227Description
In Greek mythology there are a total of nine Muses who inspire literature, science and the arts, but it is not unusual for artists to depict only three. Through the ages there have been variations of their names and attributes. The Greeks had one set, whereas the Romans used another set. In the Renaissance, Cesare Ripa was one of the first to standardize the identifications and depictions of the Muses for artists in his 1593 work Iconologia. This drawing represents Urania (Astronomy-globe and compass), Calliope (Epic Poetry-writing tablet) and Clio (History-scrolls and books) leading a young man towards the allegorical figure of sculpture.Collection
