Note
Verostko met the master calligrapher Wang Dongling when the Chinese artist attended Verostko’s course on Western Modern Art in Hangzou. The two became friends and artistic collaborators. Dongling lived with the Verostkos for several months when he was a visiting artist at the University of Minnesota.
Today, Wang Dongling is widely recognized as China’s greatest living calligrapher, known for performances in which he creates calligraphic works on a monumental scale, using forms freed from the conventions of language signification, in which the gestures themselves express meaning. Dongling likely made this work—inscribed “Wang is #1 at U of M” and featuring images from U.S. popular culture (including an M&M figure, 7-Up, and Godzilla)—as part of a performance during his Minnesota residency.Create Date
