First Killer App: Lotus 1-2-3 was the first killer application for the IBM PC. It played a significant role in the success of IBM PC-compatibles in the business market during the 1980s.
Three-in-One Solution: Marketed as a three-in-one integrated solution, Lotus 1-2-3 handled spreadsheet calculations, database functionality, and graphical charts. Its name “1-2-3” reflected these capabilities.
Industry Standard: Throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s, Lotus 1-2-3 was the standard spreadsheet used in businesses. It competed with other spreadsheets like VisiCalc, Multiplan, and SuperCalc.
Windows Era: With the acceptance of Windows 3.0 in 1990, the market for desktop software expanded. However, Lotus was eventually surpassed by Microsoft’s Excel and Word.
IBM Acquisition: IBM purchased Lotus in 1995 and continued to sell Lotus products until officially ending sales in 2013
