Origins (1979) - Paul Lutus created Apple Writer to meet his own need for a better text editor on the Apple II. [elisoftware.org] Apple purchased the program for about $7,500 and released it commercially in 1979. [en.wikipedia.org] Early versions were limited: 40-column text display
Primarily uppercase text (with special methods to indicate lowercase) [en.wikipedia.org]. Despite its simplicity, it quickly became one of the most popular Apple II applications.
