Scope and Content

The Apple-1 was the first product of Apple Computer Company (now Apple Inc.), designed and hand-built by Steve Wozniak in 1976. The idea to sell the computer came from his friend, Steve Jobs. To finance its production, Jobs sold his VW van, and Wozniak sold his HP-65 calculator. The Apple-1 was initially sold for $666.662. Unlike other computers of the time, which were sold as kits, the Apple-1 was a fully assembled circuit board. It lacked a case, keyboard, sound, or graphics. The first 50 units were sold to a local computer store, and in total, about 200 units were made. This computer marked the beginning of Apple’s journey in the tech world, showcasing the innovative spirit of its founders.
