Description

The IBM MST-2 chip set was employed in IBM’s System/370 Models 145 and 155. These models, introduced in the early 1970s, marked a significant shift from magnetic core memory to semiconductor memory. The MST-2 modules were part of IBM’s Monolithic Systems Technology (MST), which improved reliability and density compared to earlier hybrid modules. The System/370 Model 145, for instance, used semiconductor main memory and was roughly as fast as an IBM PC from 1981

General Notes

Note

The IBM System/370 Model 145 was announced on September 23, 1970, making it the fourth member of the IBM System/370 line of computers. It was a significant milestone because it was the first IBM computer to use semiconductor memory for its main memory instead of magnetic core memory. The Model 145 was described as being five times faster than the IBM System/360 Model 40. The IBM System/370 Model 155 was also part of the original System/370 line. It was announced on June 30, 1970, with first customer shipments planned for January 1971. Both the Model 155 and the Model 145 contributed to the transition from core memory to semiconductor memory in early computing systems2.
