Name/Title

1938- (Video) Konrad Zuse's computing machine Z1

Scope and Content

The Z3, designed by Konrad Zuse, was completed in 1941. It stands as the world’s first working programmable, fully automatic digital computer.

General Notes

Note

The Z3 utilized 2,600 relays and operated with a 22-bit word length at a clock frequency of approximately 5–10 Hz. Program code was stored on punched film, and initial values were manually entered. Although it was not considered vital during World War II, the Z3 made significant contributions to scientific progress. Unfortunately, the original Z3 was destroyed during an Allied bombardment of Berlin in 1943. However, a fully functioning replica was built in 1961 and is now on display at the Deutsches Museum in Munich.
