Scope and Content

The IBM 701 Electronic Data Processing Machine, also known as the Defense Calculator during development, marked IBM’s debut in the commercial scientific computing arena. Thomas Watson Jr., IBM’s CEO, famously misquoted his father, Thomas Watson Sr., saying, “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.” In reality, they received orders for 18 IBM 701 machines.
