1939-1944 Early computing devices were electro-mechanical, using relays, switches, gears, cams, and other such "hard wiring." The Harvard Mark 1, was such an electro-mechanical device. Started in 1939, it was completed in 1944. The Harvard Mark I, also known as the IBM Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator is said to be a monument in the development of the art of computing.
