The IBM 1401 is a variable-word length decimal computer that IBM announced on October 5, 1959. As the first member of the highly successful IBM 1400 series, it aimed to replace unit record equipment used for processing data stored on punched cards. The 1401 found mass appeal, with over 12,000 units produced. Many were leased or resold after being replaced by newer technology. It’s often called the “Ford Model-T of the computer industry” due to its widespread adoption1. Small businesses commonly used it as their primary data processing machine, and it also served as an off-line peripheral controller for mainframe computers. By the mid-1960s, nearly half of all computer systems worldwide were 1401-type systems
