A set of pioneer baby clothes that was worn by Maurine Abbott Hughes, who was born in 1914. The white shawl was crocheted by Velate Hughes Knight Hardy (1903-2002), who was a life-long resident and pioneer of Mesquite. In the olden days, newborn babies would have their eyes washed with boric acid water. Whiskey was then used as an antiseptic rub and consecrated oil was used to soothe the skin. Finally, a pinch of sugar was wrapped in a small piece of cloth and used as a "sugar tit" to keep the baby from crying.
