Joe and Vonda Wilson owners of Vonda's cafe in the 1930's
1st neon sign in Mesquite, Joe said "If you marry me I'll put your name up in lights", and he did! VONDA'S!!!
This location was originally the home of John and Lucy Huntsman, who built an adobe home here circa 1900. A brush shed was built nearby to house the first blacksmith shop. In the 1930’s Joe and Vonda Wilson built this cafe the 2nd story was added later. When Joe asked Vonda to marry him, he told her, “If you will marry me, I’ll put your name in lights,” and he did. He bought the first neon sign in Mesquite … ” VONDA’S CAFÉ ”. The neon café sign still shines at the present Café.
Vonda’s Café had the first slot machines in the Virgin Valley. Joe bought five second-hand slot machines in Las Vegas. This café was a landmark and the only café in Mesquite for several years. It was a favorite gathering place for young and old alike.
The only other thing that hasn’t changed in the café is the old neon clock that hangs behind the counter. This clock was known as the curfew clock for the kids for many years.
