Drug Store - 1940 #16 on Walking Tour Next to Old Post Office Built in 1940 by William Jones, this building opened as the Abbott Home Bakery, the first bakery in Mesquite. Orval and Loda Abbott sold bread and sweet rolls until Orland Frehner bought the business. Frehner added a drug store, game tables, and a soda fountain, and hired Leonard Patti as pharmacist. In the 1940’s phosphates and sodas of all varieties Lemon, vanilla and Cherry were popular favorites for quenching thirst. The place to go was Leonard Patti’s soda fountain and drug store. He sold ice cream, cold sandwiches, and medicine from this little store. Later ten American Legionnaires put up $500 each to buy the building and use it as an American Legion Hall. It has since been used as apartments and housed various businesses.
