Dairy Barn, Circa 1920’s

This was the first commercial dairy operation in Mesquite. Over twenty families in the community used this dairy barn. According to a schedule, each dairyman would drive his cows to the barn night and morning to milk them. The milk was stored in individually marked cans and cooled in a water tank in the barn. The milk was sold in Las Vegas.
Some early dairymen were Bud Hardy, Angie Barnum, Jody Leavitt, Luther Hafen, Melburn Jensen, Fenton Frehner, Victor Knight, Fenton Hughes, George Bowler, Max Hafen and the Hughes brothers. The Hafen and Hughes families later built larger private dairies.
