Description

Egg House #2 on the walking tour 61 West Mesquite Blvd The Egg Association existed from about 1929 to 1938. It was formed as a cooperative means of selling and distributing eggs. As the popularity of the motor vehicle grew, there was an increase in the number of them passing through Mesquite. With them came an increase in demand for eggs by the café, the hotel and the grocery store. Mesquite was an agriculture community and most residents had chickens to supply their personal needs for eggs. Often that supply exceeded their personal needs. This excess helped meet the increased commercial demand. Some residents went into egg and chicken production as an enterprise. Local high school boys studying vocational agriculture grew chickens and sold eggs. As production exceeded local demand, the eggs were taken to Las Vegas to be sold. The Association built a small two-story house where the eggs were brought to be candled (checked for freshness and quality) and then sold either locally or in Las Vegas. The eggs were candled in the basement. The main floor was used for doing Association business and selling feed brought from roller mills in Draper, Utah.
