In 1899 a sawmill was set up on Blackrock Mountain and the lumber was hauled over the very rough, steep mountain roads down Elbow Canyon by pioneer wagons to Mesquite. There were no planing mills so the lumber was rough. Everyone helped with the building and a curtain was used as a partition for classes. As the floor of the native lumber would wear down and the knots, being harder, would be higher, the carpenters would take hand planes and smooth the knots down so it would be smooth for dancing. The only lighting was the kerosene lamps and the wax for the dance floor was from candles shaved and sprinkled on the floor.
