A bronze sculpture of Black Horse, a Navajo chief who lived around the late 1800s. The sculpture was crafted by John Prazen (1939-2003), an incredibly renowned metal sculptor who used to have a studio in Mesquite. Mr. Prazen actually sculpted the statues in the fountain outside City Hall. As for the subject of the sculpture, there is not much information available on Black Horse, but a trader in the New Mexico area at the time remarked that he had a "stern princely bearing". As depicted in the sculpture, he always tied his hair up in a bob with a string that had a piece of turquoise attached to it. He also always wore a cloth around his forehead, in which he knotted an ancient arrowhead. Supposedly, these objects were protective charms, although the story behind them is unknown.
