First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt arrives at the Camden shipyard for the launch of the "Pine Tree" barge, accompained by Lois Lyman, wife of Richard Lyman, president of the shipyard. The 194-foot wooden barge was the largest wooden vessel built in the nation since the 1920s, and was the first of many to be built to relieve the fuel transportation problem by carrying coal. Members of the Penobscot tribe performed ritual dances to give the ship good luck, and the vessel was christened by Eleanor Roosevelt.Collection
