Diary belonging to Blanche Heald (1868-1964) of Rockport, Maine dated January-December 1890. The diary is filled with daily happenings as well as a list of books she read in that year and her opinion of them, lists of callers, and detailed ink drawings of dresses, hats and other ladies' garments.
Ella Blanche Heald (known as Blanche), born in Rockport, Maine, was the daughter of Captain Lucien Heald of Camden, Maine and Marcia Augusta Levenseller of Waldoboro.
Captain Lucien Heald was the son of Gorham F. Heal(d), a farmer in Lincolnville, Maine, and Jane Shepherd of Jefferson, Maine. Marcia Augusta Levenseller was a seamstress and the daughter of Aaron Levenseller, a Waldoboro trader, and Mary Benner of Waldoboro, Maine. Lucien and Marcia were married 7 December 1865. Captain Heald was the captain of the 3-masted schooner "Hattie G. Luce" and he drowned 26 January 1903 when the Luce, laden with granite, collided with the "John C. Buttrick" off Martha's Vineyard in a blizzard.
Blanche married William K. Ellsworth of Lynn, Massachusetts 24 November 1897. She then married John Andrew Holland of Ashland on 23 August 1909 and they resided in Boston with her widowed mother Marcia.
Blanche appears in the 1930 census living alone in Rockport, Maine. At the age of 80, she married Alfred B. Merriam of Norfolk, Virginia on 14 December 1948. She died in Union, Maine on 7 January 1964. She is buried with her parents in Amsbury Cemetery, Lot 151, in Rockport, Maine.
