Scope and Content

Genealogical history of Rufus Coombs Ames (1839-1923), descendant of Edward Dotey of the Mayflower. Rufus Ames was born on Vinalhaven and relocated to Rockport, Maine. He served in the Union Army 1861-1863. Includes papers on Benjamin Coombs and Rufus Ames and their salt-curing business on Nautilus Island off Castine. Includes photographs of Rufus Coombs Ames and his wife Sarah Patchen Ames. Includes a transcript of a letter to Mr. Ames from his grandmother, Betsey Hudson Ames, dated June 12, 1868. Includes a true story written by Fannie M. Hibbert in 1917 of her adventures on Nautilus Island in the 1860's. Includes photographs taken in the late 1800's of Nautilus Island, formerly known as Cross Island, and the old fish house buildings. Physical Characteristics: Manila folder of loose papers. Most pages are numbered. Located in gray archival box with Rufus Ames's Civil War diary (CAHC 2006.16).
