Scope and Content

Box of letters, photographs and ephemera from the Pendleton home on Barnestown Road in Hope. Some are letters to and from Philip Pendleton during his service in the South Pacific in World War II. Also included are 2 large framed portraits of Pendleton and Barnes family members and one charcoal portrait by Will Hall of William Barnes, great-great-grandfather of the donor. Will Hall was a talented artist who married Sarah "Effie" Barnes, daughter of William Barnes. There is also one cardboard matted picture of Edna St. Vincent Millay, aged about 15, with 2 adults and several high school classmates including Henry Treat Pendleton. Pages from family bible recording birth, marriages & deaths. According to the donor, "William Barnes was the father of Clifford Barnes. Clifford Barnes married Nellie Morton - they were the parents of Evelyn (Evie) Barnes and Florence Barnes. Evie Barnes married Cliff Taylor, and they ran the Taylor Inn on Elm Street in Camden, Maine. Florence Barnes married Henry Pendleton, my grandfather. Henry grew up on the old Pendleton homestead on Howe Hill Road. There were about 6 Pendleton boys, the old Pendleton house ended up with one of the brothers, Louis. Louis sold the Pendleton homestead (in the 1950's?), the house is now the site of the Rockefeller's Bald Mountain Farm. Florence and Henry Pendleton lived at the house on Barnestown Road. At one time, there were Barnes' living across the street and I believe there was another house in the area (that is long gone) and the area came to be known as Barnestown (and hence the name of the road). The old house was built sometime in the late 1790's. We have a deed from 1834 where it was transferred from one Barnes to another - we assume this was a generational transfer and the house was built by the original Barnes sometime before that. From the saw marks in the attic it has been estimated at 1790's."
