Scope and Content

Photocopies of several articles relating to Carleton and Amsbury / Amesbury sea captains and a list of vessels built at the Carleton yard and their fates. Includes compiled obituaries of several Carleton and Amsbury people. Loaned for scanning were images of several Carleton-Norwood built ships. Images were photos of paintings taken in the Norwood office, later likely destroyed in Rockport kiln fire 1907 according to donor.

Nine laser copies of paintings of selected vessels built at the shipyard: Adolph Obrig, Frederick Billings, J. Harkness, P.J. Carleton, Raphael, Richard Parsons, S.D. Carleton, William H. Macy, and Wandering Jew.

Title

Adolph Obrig cholera outbreak, 1885; Pacific Voyage 1906, William H. Macy

Description

New York Times article about "four deaths from a mysterious disease on the Bark Obrig." Article published March 16, 1885. The ill-fated Adolph Obrig was built at the Carleton-Norwood yard in Rockport, Maine in 1881 and was lost off Cape Horn due to improper rigging. Six-page transcription of Captain James Allen's account of his time as a seaman aboard the William H. Macy in 1906 in Tacoma, WA. The Macy was built at the Carleton yard in 1883. Pages copied from originals at the San Francisco Maritime Museum.
