A letter to the Library Association in Camden, Maine, from Elizabeth Knight Montgomery, offering the use of the Stackpole Homestead for a library building.
The house mentioned in the letter is the Captain Stackpole House on Elm Street. It is still standing, and currently houses the Heavenly Threads thrift shop at 57 Elm Street in Camden.
Due to concerns about space and location, the Trustees declined this offer.
To the Library Association of the Town of Camden.
I wish to give for a Public Library Building so much of the Stackpole Homestead, so called, as is necessary for that purpose.
I desire it to be a permanent memorial, and named as such, as I shall designate.
If the Association deems it suitable for a Public Library Building, shall be pleased to have them designate the extent of land required and the changes to the building needed.
I will then give the Town a deed of the property selected by them.
