Lines of the Frederick Billings half-modelEntry/Object ID
WHC 2017.32.1Scope and Content
Lines taken from the half-model of the Frederick Billings. Drafted by Ron Haug. Copyright Ron Haug and Nathan Lipfert.
The four-masted barque was 2628 tons, 282 x 45 x 29 feet. Master builder was John Pascal & son. Shipmasters were Isaac W. Sherman and Herbert H. Williams. Set on fire at Pisqua, Chile, fully loaded with nitrate, the vessel exploded and sank in 20 minutes on 29 July 1893, though all crew were saved. It was said that the crew set the fires in rebellion due to harsh treatment. Brass plaque reads: Four masted barque "Frederick Billings" launched August 11, 1885 Carlton/ Norwood and Company Builders, Rockport, Maine.
The related correspondence about the lines suggest that the half-model is not actually of the Frederick Billings, and the same information is noted on the lines.Collection
