Scope and Content

A MAP OF THE DISTRICT OF MAINE, drawn from the latest Surveys and other Best Authorities by Osgood Carleton. [Two copies] [1795] "Engraved for Judge Sullivan's History of the District of Maine. Published by Thomas J. Andrews, Boston, 1795." "A MAP of those parts of the Country most famous for being harassed by the Indians, on and long after their first settlement; and more particularly treated of in Judge SULLIVAN'S History of the District of Maine." Photocopy of the map printed for Judge [James] Sullivan's History of the District of Maine in 1795 by Thomas Andrews of Boston. The map was drafted by Osgood Carleton and is based on an earlier map [1791?] of his surveys, and other authorities. Its publication prompted the Massachusetts General Court to collect town-based surveys and resulted in Carleton's authoritative 1802 edition of A Map of the District of Maine, Massachusetts.
