18th Century German-Speaking Settlers of Present-Day Waldoboro, MaineDescription
A detailed account of German-speaking settlers of the town of present-day Waldoboro, Maine. In the introduction, the author relates "this book can be seen as as expansion and revision of Stahl's chapter 14, "Muster Roll of 1760." He continues "this book is primarily a study of those Germans who emigrated to Broad Bay from the four passenger ships that came to Boston in 1742, 1751, 1752, and 1753...primary interest is the original German immigrants and their descendants and ancestors from about 1680-1800." The book is "arranged to show groupings of immigrants by origin in various parts of Germany, together with the families they were most closely allied with in Germany." Topics include the origin of surnames, how the immigrants became "Americanized," and the customs of naming 18th century Germans. Passenger lists, family history and genealogy are also available. The majority of Germans settling in Waldoboro came from three areas of Germany: Baden-Durlach, Hessen-Nassau, and Bavaria (north and east of Wurzburg). The final chapters covers families who arrived in Boston but did not settle in Broad Bay. One of these groups established Frankfort (later known as Dresden, Maine).
