WHC 2018.157.6Scope and Content
Print of a scan of a poem by George Perry's brother James. Note on back reads: "Poem written by George's brother James when he was away working at a YMCA in Detroit. His father had just sent him [blank] from Mt. Battie. George probably picked them."
The poem is written on Boys' Division Detroit Young Men's Christian Association letterhead.
Last night I received a flower from my Dad at home, down East
Its fragrance was so rich and delicate--
that to smell it was an odor feast.
It whispered to me, all secretly, a
number of things, quite clear--
It said where it grew and who picked
it and why it was sent out here.
The side of Mount Battie is less rich because
its pink petals have gone,
But a son of the Hills where it grew was
made happy when he put it on.
Loving son James
