Scope and Content

Camden Maine Map of 20 September 1799 by John Harkness, surveyor. This map of "Cambden" was prepared for the proprietors, the Twenty Associates of the Lincolnshire Company. This color copy is an enlarged photocopy of the original, which was pocket-sized and mounted on linen - clearly intended and use for notes in the field. It is somewhat waterstained. The map shows the lots as of 20 September 1799, with the names in ink of the purchasers/settlers as the map was drawn in ink, as well as hydrography and early roads. Subsequent notes appear in pencil in another hand. Note that there are several surveys of lots, each beginning with number 1 and continuing to its end. There is also a survey revision, turning Lots 28 through 32 to front on the inner harbor. These surveys are: By Dr. David Fales, Esq: Lots 1-5 on Leveretts Neck Lots 1 (again) through 75, inland By Noah Miller of Ducktrap: Beginning with Lot 1 gore above Fales Lot no. 75 and ending with Lot 95 in the southwest corner of the town. (These oddly angled lots by Miller caused some problems.) The original of this map is in the Henry Augustus Pierce Collection of the New England Historical Genealogical Society. Permission to publish must be obtained from them.
