WHC 2024.20Scope and Content
Black and white copy of Osgood Carleton's "A Map of the District of Maine" which was included in judge [and governor of Massachusetts] History of the District of Maine published in 1795.
It shows that district of Massachusetts and its nebulous Northern and Eastern boundaries, with surveyed internal boundaries, the fiarly well-defined shoreline and some islands, the ill-defined boundary of the southern end of Maine with New Hampshire, from Portsmouth, North to Bristol and in the interior from Lebanon and Shapleigh to Newcastle.
This significant map was the forerunner of more detailed later surveyed maps of Massachusetts as it is known today as well as the same area of the District of Maine, after the Massachusetts legislature ordered surveys to be made and sent to the legislature in Boston. As well, it was the stimulus for the more intensively surveyed 1802 "Map of the District of Maine" also by Osgood Carleton.Collection
