Description

"Knox Map". A section of General Henry Knox's map of the Muscongus or Lincolnshire Grant. This copy is a black-on-white copy of the original draft of the map, which was created between 1793 and 1798 for General Knox by Captain John Hills, Surveyor. That hand-drafted original is mounted on linen and is in the collection of the Boston Athenaeum. The copy was obtained by Theodore Brown of Appleton, and the present copy was made by Donovan A.R. Bowley of Appleton. This map is of significance because, in addition to its geographic detail, it contains the names and locations of all settlers along the principal road (the future US Route 1), as well as in other locations. These names were gathered by Ebenezer Jennison and crew of Thomaston (documented by Donovan Bowley from research in the Knox Papers). An idiosyncrasy of this map is that it does not show the course of rivers that are not on Knox lands, except as they are crossed by roads, which are carefully mapped. This particular section of the larger map shows Camden in its original pre-1791 shape and bounds - i.e., before the addition in that year of the section of Canaan Plantation to the northeast. It also shows a portion of Barretstown plantation. Gift of Donovan A.R. Bowley.
