Scope and Content

Electrostatic copy of the Civil War diary (1861-1863) of Rufus Coombs Ames; together with family information compiled (1992) by his descendant, Marie Nutt Burns. This diary was written by Rufus Coombs Ames (1839-1923) during his service in the 2nd Maine, Company B during the Civil War 1861-1863. Ames details his early life in Rockport, Maine and his enlistment on April 25, 1861 for two years in the Union Army. He took part in 13 battles, including the first and second battles of Bull Run; first and second battles of Fredericksburg, Antietam, Hanover Court House, Malvern Hill, Mechanicsville, Sheppardstown, Yorktown, Savage Station and Beaverdam Creek. He served as a member of the 2nd Maine Infantry, enlisting at Castine when he was 22 years of age. Daily record of his experience in the Army begins on page 11 (Folder 1). The collection also contains family genealogy material covering the period 1595-1924 located in Folder 8 (Accession # CPL 2007.67)
