Scope and Content

Letter from Ragnhild Heistad to sibling Thordis, who was attending Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Their father was well-known landscape designer Hans Heistad and the protege of Frederick Law Olmsted. Letter describes the influenza epidemic in October 1918. "Rockport, ME Oct. 29, 1918 Dear Thordis, Have just had my supper and thought I would write you a few lines. How are you and your friends getting along? Are you still a nurse? It is getting better around here, in Rockland anyway. They have been using a hotel there as hospital there and in Camden the Congregational Chapel is being used. I suppose you know that Mrs. Smally is dead. It was a private funeral, no flowers. Mr. Jones, who had the meat market in Camden, is dead. So is the owner of Camden Fruit Store and the one in Elm Street Fruit Store, Thresa Huntly and Morse, that is delia and Ester Morse's brother. Some others too who I do not know are dead in Camden."
