Scope and Content

Letter dated May 27, 1944 relating to the discontinuance of the Aircraft Warning Service in order to shift the war effort to an offensive battle overseas. Air Corps Colonel Stewart W. Towle, Jr. thanks the volunteers at the local aircraft warning centers for their dedicated service. This letter was found among Camden resident Harold Corthell's papers, who was a volunteer in the Camden's Aircraft Warning Service. The Aircraft Warning Service (AWS) was a civilian service of the United States Army Ground Observer Corps during World War II to keep watch for enemy planes entering American airspace. It became inactive on May 29, 1944.
