Description

The mid-19th century's greatest orator, Edward Everett is best remembered today as the other man who spoke at Gettsyburg, the one that talked for two hours compared to Lincoln’s two minutes. A Harvard graduate at age 17, he was the first American to earn a Ph.D. He was President of Harvard, Governor of Massachusetts, a U.S. Congressman and Senator, Ambassador to Great Britain, and Secretary of State. He raised $69,551.06, more than one-third of all the funds needed to purchase Mount Vernon. Everett’s columns – later published as The Mount Vernon Papers -- reported on the progress of the Mount Vernon campaign to restore the home of George Washington, but they touched on many other topics as well, including Christmas customs, a comet observation, the financial crisis of 1857, lighthouses, Daniel Boone, Washington’s sittings for portrait painters and his inauguration. Physical Description: Blue hardcover, 490 pages, table of contents.
