Schooner "George W. Wells" on stocks at the Holly M. Bean shipyard in 1900. The first 6-master ever built, it was launched in August 1900 witnessed by a crowd of more than 10,000 people. Measuring 325 feet long, the Wells was lost off the North Carolina coast in September 1913. The Eastern Steamship Company wharf is visible to the left of the tree, in front of the "Wells."Collection
