Description

A comprehensively detailed historical accounting of the towns of Brunswick, Topsham, and Harpswell, Maine from the earliest explorers and settlers to the late 1800's, based on meticulous research. Arranged in a narrative format in the beginning, the topics such as churches and religious history, roads, fire companies, newspapers, are presented in chronological order. There is a chapter on general and social customs including celebrations, lectures, manners, public meetings, societies and associations as well as one on Bowdoin College and the Medical School of Maine. Brief biographies of some of the most prominent citizens of the three towns (including sketches) and family histories are available. The appendix includes lists of early settlers or land-owners of Brunswick; soldiers from Brunswick and Topsham in the Indian Wars of 1723 and 1724; soldiers of the Revolutionary war arranged by company alphabetically; soldiers of the War of 1812; national and state officers; town officers; and a comprehensive general index.
