In the '70s and '80s, there were over 230 feminist restaurants, cafes, and coffeehouses throughout the United States and Canada. Bloodroot, located in Bridgeport, Connecticut, was continuous operation for 48 years before closing in 2025. The film is a short documentary, directed by Annie Laurie Medonis, that explores this feminist, lesbian, vegan restaurant and bookstore, and illuminates the legacy of its pioneering proprietors, Selma Miriam and Noel Furie. A Culinary Uprising premiered at the San Francisco International Film Festival in April 2019.
