"Azalea" was a periodical dedicated to the perspectives and experiences of Lesbians with roots in the developing world. It published strictly unedited works of women of color, as an editorial policy aimed at deconstructing the perceived elitism of more mainstream women's media. Wanderground holds a special edition focused on poetry.

"Azalea" was published out of New York City from 1977 to 1983 by the Salsa Soul Sisters Third World Wimmin Inc. Collective, the oldest Black Lesbian organization in the U.S., which operated from 1974 to 1993, at which point it split into two separate affinity groups: African Ancestral Lesbians United for Social Change and Las Buenas Amigas, a Latina Lesbian group. Founders Joan Gibbs, Robin Christian and Linda Brown were members of the Black Lesbian Caucus of the New York City Gay Activists Alliance.Publication Details
