Description

"DYKE" magazine featured unfiltered, diverse and frequently controversial Lesbian perspectives on issues of relevance to the Lesbian-feminist subculture of the United States of the 1970's. It included articles on Lesbian politics, history, current events and happenings, literature, music, media, fashion, health and more. Examples of articles were pieces on how to dress like a Dyke and how to come out of the closet. HOLDINGS: #6, Summer 1978

Context

"Dyke: A Quarterly" was published in New York City from 1975 to 1979 under the leadership of editors Liza Cowan and Penny House. Cowan and House created a magazine that was as beautiful as it was radical, and as personal as it was political. It was expressly Lesbian separatist in its editorial perspective, and was only sold through women's outlets and the mail to Lesbians. It was also produced by Lesbian labor, being printed at a Lesbian shop and featuring articles and advertisements primarily by Lesbians. Although small, it did well and became quite influential, coming to be seen as a key periodical in the Lesbian-feminist movement. Its title and iconography were spoofs on those of LIFE magazine, and the editors were inspired by many larger publications such as LIFE, People, Vogue and the NYT.
