Softball autographed by players on the Aurora Lampworks softball team, New Haven, CTContext
The Aurora Lampworks Softball team (slow pitch) played in New Haven, CT from 1987-1989. The team had previously been sponsored by the Women’s Center, then later by Golden Thread Booksellers. I played on all those teams.
Initially, I was the catcher – and I loved it. I could be active the entire game and had no fear. Unfortunately, a knee injury in the summer of 1984 meant I could no longer play that position so I learned how to be a pitcher.
Aurora had a big following in the Lesbian community. We weren’t that great – in fact, our members were mostly in our 30s and 40s – almost “geriatric” by some standards. But we had fun and post-game gatherings at the local pizza joint were filled with lots of laughter and community.
Aurora's uniforms were gray shirts with red lettering in front and red sweatpants. Those sweatpants were great for protecting our legs - but pretty hot in the heat of the summer! We didn't have uniform ball caps.
At the end of the our last season as Aurora in 1989, I had the team autograph one of our softballs. It’s a reminder of my love for Lesbians playing softbal and the good times we hadl!Collection
