The Best-Selling Lesbian Magazine

Description

Curve was first published as Deneuve magazine. Deneuve (the Curve) was founded by Frances "Franco" Stevens in San Francisco in 1990. While working at A Different Light Bookstore she noticed that bookstores and newsstands had few lesbian publications to offer, so she decided to do something about it.

Context

The magazine was rebranded as Curve in 1996 after a trademark dispute with French actress Catherine Deneuve. Curve is now published digitally by the Curve Foundation. From "About" on the website: The Curve Foundation champions LGBTQ+ women’s and nonbinary people’s culture and stories through intergenerational programming and community building. We are inclusive of all who identify as part of the Curve community. We bring the Curve magazine archive to life, providing context and a throughline between the critical conversations in the 1990s and early 2000s and today; we support the journalists who tell our stories; and we host events that bring our community together.
