Context

"Feminist Studies," first issued in 1972, is the oldest continuing scholarly journal in the field of women's studies published in the U.S. It was started after three years of planning by women from Columbia University's women's liberation group; women's studies students at Sarah Lawrence College; & feminist activists from NYC. Its first editor Anne Caldwell ran it as an "out-of-pocket, out-of-apartment" enterprise. In 1977 it was restructured & adopted an editorial collective, moving to the University of Maryland, which continues to host it & provide it modest support.
