Goody Knapp was hung as a witch in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport where Bloodroot is located. Bloodroot had designated Wednesday evening dinners as a "womanspace" time - for Lesbians and women to come together in community to share the evening in each other's company. Occasionally, there were speakers or concerts also held during various meals.
However, being a public restaurant, they weren't permitted to to exclude entry of anyone (men) who wanted to come and eat there. So, they created the G. Knapp Historical Society as a way to create a "private function." Since it was designated at the meeting of a private group, we could maintain the space as our own. Any woman was welcome to attend as long as she indicated she was a member of the Society. Many of us also received Lifetime Membership Cards.
An Annual Meting was held during the Spring Equinox on the anniversary of the restaurant's opening. A formal meeting was held and minutes were taken. Kim Kimber was the "president" for many years. Mev Miller was "president" from around 1990-1994.Collection
