Context

Hikané was founded in 1989 by editor Jodi, who was inspired to form the newsletter after watching a performance by disabled women's theater group Wry Crips. The newsletter accepted content from all women, though it prioritized Lesbian content. Each issue had a theme, such as Sex, Disability, Humor, and Violence. The magazine was intended to be published quarterly, although financial and other resource issues prevented a consistent schedule.
