Context

The Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights took place on October 11, 1987, drawing an estimated 500,000 to 750,000 participants. Galvanized by the AIDS crisis and the 1986 Supreme Court decision upholding sodomy laws, demonstrators demanded legal equality, federal funding for AIDS research, and civil rights protections. The event featured the inaugural public display of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, laying out thousands of panels on the National Mall to memorialize those who had died. The momentum and collective grassroots energy of the march directly inspired the establishment of National Coming Out Day in 1988.
