This special issue of "Motive" magazine featured a range of Lesbian-Feminist writing, art and poetry collected from Lesbians around the U.S., with most being original to the publication, in addition to a small amount of reprinted material.
HOLDINGS: Vol. 32 No. 1, 1972, (Lesbian/Feminist Issue.)Context
"Motive" was a monthly magazine founded in 1941 by the Methodist Students' Movement and published from 1941 to 1971 by the Division of Higher Education of the Board of Education of the United Methodist Church. After a March/April 1969 Women's Issue proved controversial with Church fathers, Church support declined and "Motive" decided that it could no longer operate under the auspices of the Church. Unable to survive without Church funding, the decision was made to use the remaining available funds to put out one final gay-themed issue, which ultimately evolved into two seperate issues, the Lesbian/Feminist Issue and another, Gay Men's Liberation Issue. A collective of 12 Washington, D.C.- area Lesbians known as "The Furies," with a core group of four including: Joan E. Biren, Rita Mae Brown, Charlotte Bunch, and Colette Reid, took charge of the Lesbian-Feminist Issue. United by their shared Lesbian-Feminist ideology and separatist approach, this group co-ordinated the gathering of materials from like-minded women nationwide for production of the issue, which was printed by the Sojourner Truth Press in Atlanta, Georgia.Publication Details
